GE Raises Dividend, 15 More Companies Follow Suit
General Electric Company (GE) operates as a technology, media, and financial services company worldwide. Back in 2009, General Electric cut dividends by 68% to 10 cents/share. Investors, who just a few months earlier were reassured by the company’s CEO that the dividend is safe, rushed to the exits, sending the stock price to its lowest levels in a decade. The company halted its stock buyback program, and issued shares to the public. Legendary Investor Warren Buffett also made an investment in the conglomerate, by putting several billion in exchange for preferred stock yielding 10%. Almost one and half years after the dividend was cut, the company raised its quarterly dividend 20% to 12 cents/share on Friday. The news sent the stock over 3% higher for the day. Whether the company can... more
Introducing the Dividend Pretenders
In compiling the Dividend Champions list of companies that have paid higher dividends for at least 25 straight years, I long ago added a tab of companies that I called Contenders, which have increased their payouts for 15-24 years. The hope is that those companies will replenish the Champions roster as they increase their streaks. In a recent post, I mentioned that I have been gathering information on several dozen “pre-Contenders” (Pretenders?) that have increased their dividends for at least a dozen years, and many of those companies can be expected to replenish the ranks of the Contenders. That group has now been added as a tab to the Champions spreadsheet (and will first appear in the July 30 update) and are listed below.Much like the Champions and Contenders, the Pretenders... more
A Cheap Internet Stock With High Dividend Yield
Since the 1990s, internet stocks have been perceived as high growth companies. Outside of the well-known internet stocks like Google (GOOG), Amazon (AMZN) and Yahoo (YHOO), many investors still perceive internet stocks as just high flyers with little to no earnings. However, many companies within the internet space have tremendous earnings power and many are now returning some of that cash back to their investors. In February, Expedia (EXPE) initiated a quarterly dividend program. TheStreet.com (TSCM) and Marchex (MCHX) also pay investors a quarterly dividend, but the yields are generally quite small.... more
GE Increases Dividend Earlier Than Expected
Well General Electric (GE), who cut their dividend from C$0.31 per share to C$0.10 per share in early 2009, has now boosted their payout to C$0.12 per share. This 20% increase brings their dividend back to levels last visited in before the turn of the century. Yes, GE shareholders including myself are partying like it's 1999. This increase came earlier than expected as GE had mentioned that they were looking to a dividend hike in 2011. They also announced an extension of their share repurchase program as they are sitting on loads of cash. I'll take a dividend increase any way that I can get one and I remain confident in GE's future. I especially like their involvement with alternative energy and developing market infrastructure. Their high weighting in financial services really hurt them... more
18 Companies on Dividend Death Watch
I recently wrote that “One nice thing about compiling the Dividend Champions list of companies that have paid higher dividends for at least 25 straight years (which can be found here: http://dripinvesting.org/Tools/Tools.asp ) is that I get to see which companies are nearing the anniversaries of their previous dividend increases. Since most of these firms raise their payout about the same time every year, we can say with some confidence that they are likely to do so again.” The flip side of that coin is that I also get to see which companies are in danger of being deleted because they have gone too long without an increase. Although companies can remain on the list even without an increase in the current year (as long as the total dividends exceed what was paid in the prior year), the... more
