Avoiding the Dividend Trap: Quality Reigns Supreme
Dividend-paying stocks are often seen as being higher-quality and stabler than their non-dividend-paying counterparts. Thus, they can be viewed as the next step up on the risk/return spectrum between lower-risk bonds and higher-risk stocks. But there is a point at which dividend-paying stocks actually become riskier than the average stock. Earlier this summer, shares of BP (BP) offered a trailing 12-month dividend yield of 9%. This would be a great deal if it was sustainable, after all Exxon Mobil's (XOM) yield is less than 3%. But the market was correctly forecasting that BP's dividend would be cut. Another example is New Century Financial, a subprime mortgage REIT that offered a dividend yield of around 18% at the peak of the housing bubble. That high dividend was nothing more than a... more

By December 10, 2010, BDI was at 2,095, a new capesize could easily be bought for $63 mln. and a new panamax cost less than $45 mln.... more

GE Raises Dividend for Second Time in 2010: Should You Care?
Last week industrial conglomerate General Electric (GE) raised distributions by 17% to 14 cents/share. Equity investors viewed this boost in a positive way, sending GE stock price higher for the day. This was the second dividend increase for GE in 2010, after the company boosted its payout by 20% earlier this year to 12 cents/share. Dividend increases are typically a bullish sign from companies, which shows their confidence that their business would be able to generate sufficient cash flow in order to pay the higher distribution amount. For GE however, this stunning 40% increase in the quarterly distribution comes after it cut dividends from 31 cent/share to 10 cents/share in 2009 during the financial crisis. Furthermore, investors who are hoping that GE might eventually restore its... more
