For Some Smoking Dividend Yields, Look to Tobacco

The dust has settled on a turbulent 18 months in the tobacco industry, during which material excise tax increases and smoking bans were implemented in several markets across the world. The ability to raise prices is the key to earnings growth in the tobacco industry, and while these measures negatively impacted volumes, we continue to believe that the pricing power of the leading manufacturers remains intact. The market appears to agree, with tobacco stocks rising by an average of more than 20% during the last six months, outperforming the 9% increase in the S&P 500. Although we anticipate little upside to the stocks at current levels, dividend yields on tobacco stocks are running in the midsingle digits. We think dividend investors with the stomach for "fat tail" risk should still find... more

10 Dividend Stocks With High Returns on Equity

One of the biggest myths about dividend investing is that companies which pay a dividend offer no growth, and thus they pay the distribution in order to keep their long term investors. Many naysayers believe that a company that does not reinvest all of its profits back into the business should be sold. In my experience as a dividend investor, I have seen only one company which has successfully managed to reinvest all of its profits. The reason why this company was so successful in reinvesting those profits was because of the genius of its asset allocator - Warren Buffett. In retrospect, Warren Buffett is a closet dividend investor, who invests in companies generating sufficient extra cashflows that allows him to exercise his investing prowess and buy assets at a discount.... more

2 Great, Dividend-Paying Insurance Stocks

Last week my advisory led off with a question from a man concerned about “building a family legacy for future generations.” One of my readers, Bradley K., a Chartered Life Underwriter, was kind enough to send this response: Tell the reader who is worried about estate building to buy life insurance. Proceeds are not income taxable, and policy ownership can be arranged to avoid estate taxes too. Spendthrift provisions can be arranged thru the use of life insurance trusts.... more

Dogs of the Dow: Are High Quality Stocks Also a Dividend Yield Opportunity?

This is an old, but still interesting, investment strategy. The idea is to buy the 10 ‘Dogs’ or worst performers on the Dow Jones Index for a given year. The actual technique is to buy the 10 highest-yielding Dow stocks at the end of each year. That strategy would have worked well in 2010, as the highest yielding Dow stocks clearly outperformed lower-yielding members of the Dow. This chart shows how all the 30 members of Dow Jones Industrials Index performed last year. You can see that the ‘Dogs’ did well: Source: Bespoke Investment Group... more
