Growing Dividends From Industrial Goods
The industrial goods sector is scarcely spoken of in the financial media. This strikes me as odd since industrial goods are between commodity goods and technology goods in terms of complexity, yet the basic materials sector and the technology sector both receive more attention. Somehow components are less ineresting than the commodities they were made from and the products they are used to make. Regardless, there are great stocks to be found in rough and boring sectors. The following screen was performed to find attractive, dividend paying stocks: Dividend yield. Each stock pays a dividend yield of at least 2%, which is in excess of the 10-year Treasury bond and the dividend yield of the S&P 500. Long term historical dividend growth. Each of these stocks had over a 5% average annual... more
7 Candidates Sporting Yields As High As 12%
Market volatility and economic uncertainty is driving more individuals into stocks that pay dividends. Investors who are new to the concept of dividend investing should take the time to understand the following ratios as they could tremendously improve ones long term odds of choosing winning candidates. The payout ratio tells us what portion of the profit is being returned to investors. A pay out ratio over 100% indicates that the company is paying out more money to shareholders, then they are making; this situation cannot last forever. In general if the company has a high operating cash flow and access to capital markets, they can keep this going on for a while. As companies usually only pay the portion of the debt that is coming due and not the whole debt, this technique/trick can... more
The 'Lucky 13' Dividend Stocks For 2012
Barron's had an article this week highlighting the "Lucky 13" portfolio of the Investment Quality Trends ("IQT") newsletter, which is published by managing editor, Kelley Wright. From the article: Writing in IQT's mid-January edition, Wright observes that while stocks are entering 2012 on the rise, unresolved euro-zone problems probably will spawn "some white-knuckle moments in the first half of the year." But, he adds, that "will provide an opportunity to acquire some of the great cyclical and industrial companies at prices and yields that will not be revisited for a considerable period of time." Unfortunately, as... more

Verizon's Earnings Disappoint; Dividend Doesn't
Verizon (NYSE: VZ) released its fourth-quarter earnings statement today, and a quick look at its share price -- dropping almost 3% in the first half-hour of the day -- will tell you it wasn't received well. But how bad could it really be? After all, it did show company-record quarterly revenue growth of 7.7% year-over-year.
First off, Verizon's adjusted EPS (non-GAAP) of $0.52 for its consolidated operations is only a penny less than the estimate that Businessweek's poll of analysts came up with. But that EPS number is an adjustment upward to account for a $0.71-per-share loss the company took for non-cash pension items – that's a serious impact.... more
