Can An "Attractive" Rating Overcome Lower Yield By "Safe & Lucky" Dividend Dogs?
A quest for outstanding underdog stocks led the author to peruse "Y Ratings." This set of instant curses or blessings declare every YCharts equity listing "Avoid" or "Neutral" or "Attractive" or "Unrated." Seventy-three 4%+yield dogs tagged "Attractive" by YCharts showed yields to 11.47% as of 1/25/17. Forty of that group had cash flow yield sufficient to "safely" cover dividends. Those are the forty "Lucky Dogs" featured in this article.
The Dividend Dogs Rule
The "dog" moniker was earned by stocks exhibiting three traits: (1) paying reliable, repeating dividends, (2) their prices fell to where (3) yield (dividend/price) grew higher than their peers. Thus, the highest yielding stocks in any collection became known as "dogs." More precisely, these are, in fact, best called, "underdogs".
These 73 "Safe" Lucky Dividend Dogs Fetched 4%+ Yield
Broker one-year target results from Yahoo! Finance based on market closing prices as of 1/25/17 for forty stocks from ten of eleven Morningstar sectors were screened for cash flow to cover dividend, and yields exceeding 4% to reveal the actionable conclusions discussed below.
