Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.20 percent or 23.53 points to 12, 018.44. Nasdaq Composite index was down 0.39 percent or 10.69 points to 2,738.85, and the Standard and Poor's 500 index fell 0.34 percent or 4.49 points to 1,299.54.
Amid the negative trend of the market, several companies declared their quarterly and annual dividends.
Royal Dutch Shell Plc (NYSE: RDS-A) declared an interim dividend of $0.42 per ordinary share, payable on March 25, 2011. Shares of the company lost 3.88 percent or $2.85 to $70.58.
Shares of Enbridge Inc. (NYSE: ENB) lost 1.62 percent or $0.96 to $58.24 despite the company raising its dividend by 15 percent to 49 cents per share, payable on March 1, 2011.
Ross Stores Inc. (Nasdaq: ROSS) plans to boost its quarterly dividend by 38 percent to 22 cents per share. The stock is trading up 5.63 percent at $68.50.
